The Sontec MES-432 enjoys a near-mythical reputation among sound engineers. Introduced in 1972, it was created by Burgess McNeil
and George Massenburg and was the first fully parametric equalizer ever commercially available. Beyond its functionality,
it’s prized for its sound—it’s one of those devices that improves sound even with the controls set to neutral. Furthermore,
the choice of parameter values, combined with the shape of the EQ bands and the overall responsiveness of the device, gives the MES-432 a uniquely musical sound.
When Make Believe Studios approached us about partnering with Sontec to create a digital version of the Sontec MES-432D9,
we thought: if we were going to try to recreate the soul of an existing device, it would at least make sense to make it a pioneering
and legendary mastering equalizer.
After listening to the MES-432D9 equalizer provided to us by Sontec, we realized that this device was the source of that magical “magic”
that is felt in major music releases, and we decided that if we were going to create a digital version, it should not be just an emulation,
but a new Sontec – one with which the creator of the original parametric equalizer would be happy to associate his name.
