«Dire Straits» (IPA: /daɪər streɪts/, pronounced Daier Straits) is a British rock band, founded in 1977 by Mark Knopfler (guitar, vocals), his brother David Knopfler (guitar), bassist John Illsley and drummer Pick Withers. The band’s manager for most of its career was Ed Bicknell. Dire Staits’ musical style, which developed from pub rock, can be characterized as melodic blues-rock, heavily influenced by country, rock and roll, folk and jazz. The band’s work was dominated by melancholic compositions. Despite the fact that the band was formed during the era of punk rock and was in stark contrast to it in sound, thanks to the talent of Mark Knopfler, they gained worldwide popularity.
Dire Straits are among the most commercially successful bands in the history of rock music, having sold more than 120 million copies of their albums in total. The band’s most popular album, Brothers in Arms, has sold more than 30 million copies.
The band’s most famous hits include “Telegraph Road”, “Sultans of Swing”, “Romeo and Juliet”, “Private Investigations”, “Money for Nothing”, “Walk of Life”, “Tunnel of Love”, “Brothers in Arms” and “Calling Elvis”.
