Spectra 610 Complimiter®
In the mid-1960s, William G. Dilley introduced the world to his revolutionary new dynamics processor, the Model 610 Complimiter. A truly unique device, it was not only the fastest and quietest of its kind, but was also capable of providing completely separate peak limiting and compression functions. For decades, the Model 610 could be found protecting levels on tape, connected via the mixing bus, and even before turning in some of the most famous recording studios in the world.
Complimiter™ is a unique concept in dynamics processing, offering an ultra-fast, peak limiter and intelligent compression response. It is not a serial limiter and compressor, but a complex design that allows both processors to interact dynamically based on the source material.
Peak Limiting Only: With the slope and release at 10, adjust the input level so that the threshold LED briefly flashes on peaks without staying on. You can use this mode before your favorite compressor to transparently handle fast peaks and get more of what comes after the plugin.
Compression and Limiting: Increase the input level until the VU meter shows a reduction in gain, with the threshold LED flashing in intervals. This mode is designed to reduce peaks and maximize dynamic range, and is ideal for light to moderate compression.
Compression Only: Compression mode engages when the input signal remains above the threshold with the meter fully on and the VU meter showing the GR amount. Anywhere a large amount of compression is required, this mode is ideal.
The vintage model emulates record producer Tchad Blake’s unit, which is typically used on drum overheads or with the bone mic technique. Featuring a super-fast peak limiter, setting the Slope and Release to the fast settings creates a heavy, sometimes distorted sound, turning it into a unique color box. You can find its preferred settings in the presets section of the plugin.
Adjust the Mism knob on stereo or dual mono tracks to unlink stereo channels and separate paired stereo devices into mismatched configurations.
In Vintage mode the deviation is quite significant, taking inspiration from Chad’s attachment to his mismatched units, while in Modern mode the effect is more subtle.
Telefunken® Echomixer
This carefully crafted plug-in takes the unique spring reverb to a new level, emulating a modified version of the original 1960’s hardware unit with the unique ability to daisy chain three channels of this germanium mixer.
Calibration: A good indicator to know if it is too hot is the orange LED. It should blink and react to the audio signal, not be constantly on. The optimal level range for maximum headroom is -18 to -22 dBfs.
Activate at least one of the three channels to turn on the mixer stage. For a richer sound, daisy chain the channels to create unique tones. Note that this device is source-dependent; proper gain
setting and adjustment of the Gain IN knob make a significant difference to the sound.
Experiment with each channel independently with the Gain IN knob. Solo and audition individual channels using Shift+click. For a fully wet reverb, turn off all channels and set the reverb amount slider to maximum.
The Great British Spring (GBS)
The GBS plugin is a simple emulation of the esoteric spring reverb created by Bandive, and features a pair of Accutronics spring tanks housed in a long black plastic drain pipe, showcasing its unconventional yet functional design for longer reverb times.
We’ve enhanced the GBS plugin with features like pre-delay, reverb time, filters and automatic gain control for more flexibility.
– Length You can adjust the reverberation time (spring length) from very short to a long and rich sound with overtones and nuances of the original machine.
– Pre-delay You can delay the processed signal up to 200 ms.
– Filters To enable or bypass the filters, double-click on the Low or High pass circles. This section has gain compensation, allowing you to get more acoustic effects from this rich-sounding reverb.
