Bryce’s dedication to film music led to the development of a guitar of his own design – a guitar that was based on the range and capabilities of the piano. With the ability to accurately record existing piano music on this guitar, the instrument became a new and exciting platform for writing and performing music in any style, fueling the emergence of hybrid-oriented music. After moving to Los Angeles, Bryce quickly accepted a position at Hans Zimmer’s Remote Control Productions, where he was involved in writing and producing many hit films, video games and television shows. During this time, he worked very closely with Grammy-nominated and Emmy-winning composer of Game of Thrones fame, Ramin Djawadi. These relationships have led to work on projects such as Warner Brothers’ Clash of the Titans, MGM/UA’s The Elusive, Electronic Arts’ Medal of Honor and Need for Speed, Activision’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, and many more others. In addition to this, Bryce also contributed music to Rango, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Puss in Boots, Wanted and Race, which featured 7-octave guitar.
The guitar as we know it has proven itself to the world as an incredibly versatile musical instrument, with versatility that, thanks to innovative players over the years, has gone far beyond standard designs. During my first year of university, I realized some limitations. I realized that at that time so much piano and orchestral music was inaccessible to guitars, and any attempts to transcribe such works were greatly compromised. Apparently, this is also the reason why many legendary composers did not use the guitar in their works due to its inability to create powerful loud piano or orchestral sounds. Unfortunately, this leads to a natural segregation of the guitar repertoire from the rest of the world’s musical repertoire; to the division of guitar music into musical works that have little in common. It is clear that the guitar slowly evolved throughout its existence and only reached its peak of popularity in the 20th century, thanks to innovations in electronic technology and the modern music in which it was featured. And yet I felt a void between guitar music and the rest of the music world. I’ve designed a guitar that I think begins the journey towards overcoming these limitations.
I utilized the talents of the exceptionally experienced and respected Australian guitar maker Gerard Gillet to create the instrument I designed. After much discussion regarding the guitar, he not only supported me, but was also enthusiastic about the new instrument. Colin Bloxom wired the electronics for my design and Frank Grabeza did the final painting of the prototype. The financial side of this design was provided through the contribution of the Australian Arts Council.
These days I use the guitar in a variety of textures to create my own compositions.
