Years ago—before she became known as Tracey Brakes—the artist then operating under the alias Princess Girlfriend posted a sample pack on the r/drumkits subreddit. Inspired by the sounds of SOPHIE and Flume, the release unexpectedly went viral.
The sharp, ringing snares and thick, viscous sound effects from that collection went on to shape the sonic identity of various offshoots within the hyperpop scene. Since then, Tracey has gained recognition as a producer, vocalist, and a provocative presence on Twitter, all while continuing to release free samples on a monthly basis. Now, with the arrival of Princess Girlfriend 2, Brakes aims to bridge the gap between her past and her present.
Featuring genre-defining growling basses, hard-hitting drums, hyper-exaggerated textures, and anthemic melodies, this pack represents the most complete realization of the ideal sound design that Tracey has long envisioned. We caught up with Brakes in her apartment on the gm_construct map to discuss the creation of Princess. “You can go from something that sounds like a gentle anime soundtrack to diving deep into the bleeding guts of a computer, then fall out of reality—only to pop back up on the other side, riding a massive dubstep bassline straight out of 2011,” she says, while trying to hide a folder labeled “princessgf_3_final_final” from our view. “I just did whatever I felt like; it’s all a reflection of who I am.
I hope to inspire people to create what they love […] no matter how silly, insane, beautiful, or grotesque it might seem—I hope this pack helps someone along that journey in some way.” Whether you’re a die-hard fan looking to complete your collection or a newcomer to the world of tracey brakes, this expansive release is a must-have. Princess Girlfriend 2—a major new milestone in the work of tracey brakes—is available for download now!
