Polaris is an echo/reverb plugin inspired by early hardware digital reverbs from the late 1970s (such as the Ursa Major SST-282), capable of delivering echo, ambience, and reverb effects from a single multi-tap delay line.
Overview
When hardware digital reverbs first hit the market, they were very expensive. Most manufacturers employed chains of comb and all-pass filters—a method that yielded smoother reverb but demanded significant processing power and chip resources. However, other methods existed that utilized a single multi-stage delay line to generate acceptable reverb at an affordable price point.
The concept is simple yet highly effective: you mix a few unmodulated taps (Early Reflections) with a set of modulated taps (Diffusion) to create a reverb that is both cost-effective and convincing.
We have refined this approach by adding an Echo section that circulates alongside the Diffusion section, enabling longer reverb tails. Furthermore, you can easily edit individual taps to craft custom room responses, resonant comb filters, Karplus-style tuned delay lines, chorus, flanger, vibrato, and more.
We have also introduced new features such as Shimmer, internal sample rate reduction (ideal for achieving a vintage digital sound), Stereo Width (ping-pong delay effect), and Swell. The Swell function smooths out the input signal’s transients, with an attack time that automatically syncs to the delay time. This new feature is perfect for ambient guitar textures, lush infinite pads, and much more. In version 1.5, we added Pre-Delay, Modulation Boost, and a 3-band feedback equalizer to the new Echo editor page.
