Description:
The piano roll, the way it was meant to be.
Draw glissandos, slides, and vibrato directly onto the note. Sends data in MPE or MIDI 1.0 format to any synthesizer—whether standalone or as a plugin.
What’s New:
Features – MIDISketch Synth, updated version (early beta): range limiter, Serum-style unison, a filter display that moves with the sound, and voice modulation via macros and customizable pads.
– Time signatures: twelve signatures plus host-sync mode—includes grid, ruler, snapping, loop markers, count-in, metronome, and MIDI export.
– MIDI generators: place a chord or arpeggiator plugin before the “Roller” and record its output as editable MPE curves.
– MPE MIDI import: drag-and-drop preserves glissando, pressure, and slide data instead of converting them to standard notes, while reading the glissando range from the file.
– Free 7-day trial: starts only when you click “Start”; it does not begin automatically. Early access users receive a new trial period.
– Stretch MIDI to BPM: adjust the timing of every note, CC lane, trigger key, and loop end to a new tempo in a single undo step.
– Realistic piano keys: authentic black-and-white keyboard layout with short raised keys, enabled by default. Toggle via the Design > Options menu.
– Interface scaling: set MIDISketch to any scale between 100% and 200%; all panels, dialogs, and controls scale accordingly.
New:
– Expression pads: Pressure, slide, pan, and strike velocity are represented as curves that can be drawn directly within the synth. Pressure and slide shape the filter for each note, pan follows the per-voice pan setting, and strike velocity controls nothing until you assign it—there are no hidden assignments.
– Decay tension: Drag a point on the synth’s envelope display to adjust the decay curve; double-click to reset it to the classic exponential curve.
– Detachable shell: The built-in synth and sampler reside in the same movable, scalable, detachable shell as the host plugin, featuring a settings gear for “Init” reset and master configuration.
– Mixer automation: Right-click the MIX control to automate it; it becomes a slot in the expression lane, and the lane opens for drawing.
– Global pitch wheel: A dedicated pitch bend range—separate from per-note pitch bend—with presets and an on/off switch.
– Recording time offset: Ranges from -150 to +150 ms, keeping the take coherent even if you play ahead of the click.
– Precise tuning preservation: Intervals like pure thirds or harmonic sevenths are preserved during recording rather than being snapped to the nearest semitone.
– “What’s New” panel: In-app news and release notes, updated from the server without requiring a re-installation. Enable the “Show on startup” option in the Help section.
– Scale highlighting: Scale rows receive a soft accent tint matching the brightest tone. Lines outside the zoom range remain unchanged.
– Zoom cursors: when using Ctrl+scroll or Alt+scroll (as well as middle-mouse zooming), a stretching glyph appears for the axis being zoomed.
– Full-screen button: a dedicated toolbar button in standalone mode, located to the right of the settings. F11 still works.
– Spectrogram overlay: a new “Notes Overlay” option displays the scan heatmap over your notes to help track dense material.
– Grid color slider: adjusts grid lines from black to white in the “Design” modal; settings are saved per theme.
– UI scaling: ranges from 100% to 200%, adjustable in the “Design” or “Settings” sections. Independent of your operating system’s display scaling.
– Detune value input: allows for precise entry of the Detuned Unison value; the slider snaps to whole semitones when dragged. Hold Alt to move the slider freely.
– Performance display: press F10 to view real-time audio and drawing synchronization, including frame rate.
– Latency compensation: MIDISketch reports the latency of hosted synths and effects to your DAW, ensuring what you hear stays in sync with everything else. Press F10 to view current figures.
– CC track export: drawn CC tracks now move along with exported MIDI data and dragged elements, each on its own channel. Parameter tracks remain in place, as they control the plugin rather than the MIDI stream. – Curved carrier for low-frequency generators: A low-frequency generator within an expression or CC lane now follows the curve of the segment it sits on, rather than oscillating around a straight line between anchor points. This has always been the case for pitch.
Improved:
– Unified color language: Expression lanes and synth pads share a common color scheme—velocity is gold, pressure is orange, glide is purple, and pan is light blue.
– New typography: Jura for readability, Saira Semi Condensed for controls. A unified type system across every panel and dialog box.
– Faster rendering: Scrolling is noticeably faster when working with dense sketches, and fast rendering is now the default. Compatibility mode remains available in Quick Start.
– Chevron handling: The end chevron and the final pitch-bend point no longer “fight” for the same pixels, and the Multi-Note chevron adjusts both pitch and duration.
– CC layering: Works like DAW automation—recording over a lane replaces the existing data covered by the pass rather than merging with it.
– Cursor accuracy: The cursor and mouse click align perfectly everywhere; pitch points brighten and enlarge on hover, and lane points act as precise handles.
– Scan panel: Redesigned with distinct sections, precise sliders, and a display-only octave shift. The heatmap remains consistent during zooming.
– Recording dialog: Clearer hierarchy. Green now indicates active status rather than simply highlighting every header. – LFO editing: semitone snapping when adjusting depth, displayed…real-time pitch-bend/continuous controller values at envelope points; pop-up windows for long loops.
– MIDI settings: reorganized into clearer sections with simple names.
– Status tooltips: tooltips now start with a highlighted header and are no longer truncated prematurely.
– Display scaling: UI text remains sharp at 125% and 150% Windows scaling.
– Plugin list: displays instantly, showing the results of the last scan while a rescan is in progress.
– “Perform” tool: strokes are captured with the same smoothing as MPE recording; strokes started before playback begins are captured from the very first tick.
– MIDISketch Link: the panel is draggable and does not overlap other tools.
– Fewer standard OS dialogs: “New Workspace,” “Scan Audio,” “Deep Scan,” export settings, and pitch bend range input now feature the MIDISketch visual style.
– Division dialogs: custom EDO selection and the post-grid-change prompt now match the MIDISketch style. If the prompt is dismissed, a “Mismatch” message appears, as the grid has already changed—the only remaining question is whether your notes align with it.
– User settings: redesigned. The interface scrolls if it exceeds the available space, ensuring all controls remain accessible at any UI scale.
– Ruler: scales with the interface; scale values are centered, leaving room for adjustments.
– MPE Defaults: redesigned interface matching the rest of the app, featuring an Auto/Manual toggle. – Expression handlers: grabbing one is now stable—the hand cursor and the click point to the same target, both lanes use the same grab radius, and the handler moves only its specific point.
– Audio settings: these now scale with the interface and are resizable, so long device names appear on a single line instead of wrapping.
– Context-aware interface scaling: the standalone and plugin versions remember their own separate scale settings, so a comfortable standalone size no longer forces the same size inside your DAW.
– Note on existing sketches: CC curves now match the shape you drew—previously they were about 10% smaller—and Expression or CC LFOs placed on a curved segment are re-mapped to follow that curve. Straight segments remain unchanged.
Fixed:
– Moving a note: pitch points and MPE expression curves now move with the note instead of lagging behind as the note moves past them.
– Expression handles: the two handles on a curved segment now converge under the cursor rather than moving apart, and a handle no longer drags its neighbor along with it.
– Clicking a point: when multiple notes are selected, clicking an existing point no longer adds a new point on top of it.
– Adding an LFO: right-clicking now places it only on the curve between two points; clicking on a point removes it, and clicking elsewhere on the lane does nothing.
– Expression panel: collapsing the panel no longer leaves ghost lines on the grid until the next edit.
– Playback display: the header no longer shows a “PLAYING” bar behind the “IDLE” label. – Sketch undo: Opening a sketch creates a new history, so the undo function no longer carries notes over from the previous song to the new one.
– MPE import: Imported pitch bend and expression curves are no longer removed when resizing a note.
– Built-in synth: A synth that cannot be found no longer disappears from the saved project.
– Audio export: Renders the entire chain, including effects and the master level.
– Synth clicks: Auditioning a note no longer produces a click upon key release, nor does a click occur during rapid key re-triggering.
– Filter accuracy: Resonance sounds exactly as displayed, and a new note never inherits the pressure, slide, or brightness of the previous note.
– Trigger mode: Notes not tied to a signal play on the synth as usual.
– Pitch bend range: Some synths would revert to a +/- 48 semitone range after playing a few times, and opening the plugin window would overwrite your project’s range setting; both issues have been fixed.
– Templates: Saving as a template no longer saves the entire song along with it.
– Missing effects: A missing plugin no longer deletes the entire chain upon loading; the slot is preserved, and the mixer indicates what is missing.
– Sustained notes: A note held when the transport stops now closes correctly, and three issues that could cause absurdly long notes have been fixed.
– Chords: Double-clicking Strummed chord notes: editing a single note within a strummed chord now affects only that note, rather than applying settings to the entire selected fragment by default.
– Step Octave Scanner: now functions correctly again, shifting only the visual display without affecting playback or note triggering.
– Expressions: invisible markers are no longer captured; both end markers remain visible when bending a segment.
– Dark themes: the expression editor body is no longer solid black, and the measure ruler is clearly legible.
– Quick Start: no longer opens behind other dialog boxes when loading the plugin in a DAW.
– Stability: fixed crashes that could occur when closing the application or replacing the plugin during scanning or export operations.
– UI scaling: dialog boxes that previously appeared cramped, clipped, or overlapped at 150% and 200% scaling now display correctly. This applies to features such as Quantize, Ramp, Detuned Unison, Scan Audio, MPE Defaults, Strum, Arpeggiate, the Stamp panel, and the synth browser.
– Tooltips: the tooltip line at the bottom no longer overlaps with open dialog boxes.
– Mirror tool: brightness now matches other panel tools, and the expand button no longer has square corners.
– Tuning Snap: clicking outside the panel to close it no longer selects a preset or re-tunes the project.
– Detuned Unison: fixed an issue where values were converted incorrectly when switching between cents and semitones.
– Pattern Browser: clicking a pattern no longer opens the Chord Builder, and buttons hidden during a search with no matches no longer respond to clicks. – Expression tabs: tooltips point to incorrect lines.
