Description:
Bitwig has released version 6 of its software workstation.
The DAW features numerous improvements, a redesigned graphical interface, and many other new additions.
What’s New in Bitwig Studio 6:
This release introduces significant changes to the automation system and unveils “Automation Clips,” a feature built upon the program’s existing Audio and Note Clip functionality. Automation curves can now be accessed in two new ways: via Automation Mode—which overlays automation data for the most recently used parameter onto each track—and through the new Detail Editor Panel. The editing process itself has been substantially overhauled; improved gestures and automation behavior make creating and editing curves more intuitive.
Visual updates include: editing tools arranged as a palette on the right side of the interface for easy access; grid appearance customizable within each editor via the editor settings menu in the bottom-right corner; right-clicking the top of the program window to access project-wide visual controls; and dynamic track headers that adapt to resizing (shrinking to a compact size or revealing more controls when space permits).
Other new features include: an auto-zoom option in the Arranger that expands the selected track while keeping everything else in place; an Audition tool (allowing for direct previewing of any track or clip); a Step Input tool (for quick, intuitive entry of multiple notes); and much more.
What’s new in 6.1:
Bitwig Studio v6.1 Release Notes:
Version 6.1 introduces an enhanced Sampler with expanded Slicing capabilities across all playback modes. This allows for the rapid division of samples into fragments that can be triggered via MIDI controller. Slices can be distributed evenly, aligned to the musical grid, or placed at pitch-change points (thanks to built-in automatic pitch detection). Additionally, individual looping and modulation settings are available for each fragment, and clips can be sliced directly within the Sampler from the Arranger or Launcher.
In Repitch mode, sample playback dynamically speeds up or slows down in response to notes, offering a unique take on the auto-tune effect. The Spectral mode is designed for pristine time-stretching without compromising audio quality. The “Preserve Onsets” option stretches samples while bypassing transients—maintaining sharp attack—while automatic tempo detection quickly synchronizes samples to the project. Furthermore, Spectral mode allows for formant control and harmonic transformation via the “Bend” function, which supports quantization to octaves or the project’s selected key.
The new Fragments engine delivers advanced granular synthesis, capable of generating up to 256 independent grains per voice. It offers control over grain size, direction, and random movement (Motion), as well as the ability to create dense soundscapes (Massive Density) using the Repeats function (up to 16 repetitions). Other improvements include an updated Repitch mode featuring two emulation “characters”—Analog (for saturation and tape-style coloration) and Digital (for emulating 90s-era vintage samplers or extreme distortion)—with per-voice processing capabilities; an upgraded Cycles mode (three new algorithms for adjusting PWM, harmonic balance, and phase modulation); a Freeze function to switch the sampler to oscillator mode; a Duophonic option for crossfading between the two Cycles engines for a smoother sound; and much more.
