Rihanna (born Robyn Rihanna Fenty; February 20, 1988, Barbados) is a Barbadian R’n’B singer from Saint Michael, Barbados. At the age of 16, she moved to the United States of America to begin her singing career under the guidance of producer Evan Rogers. She subsequently signed a contract with Def Jam Recordings after auditioning for Jay-Z, the head of the label at the time.
In 2005, Rihanna released her debut album, Music of the Sun, which entered the top ten of the Billboard 200 albums chart, and the single “Pon de Replay” became successful on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Less than a year later, the singer released her second studio album, A Girl like Me (2006), which peaked in the top five of the Billboard album chart, and the song “SOS” became Rihanna’s first single to top the Hot 100 chart. Her third studio album, Good Girl Gone Bad (2007), included four hit singles “Umbrella”, “Take a Bow”, “Disturbia”, “Don’t Stop the Music”, and received nine Grammy nominations, winning in the category Best Collaboration (Singer/Rap) for the song “Umbrella” featuring Jay-Z. Her fourth studio album, Rated R, was released in November 2009; Several songs have reached the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100 chart: “Russian Roulette”, “Hard”, and “Rude Boy”, which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100.
Her fifth studio album, Loud (2010), produced three number-one singles: “Only Girl (In the World)”, “What’s My Name?” and “S&M”. Rihanna has sold over 20 million albums and 60 million singles, making her one of the best-selling artists of all time. She is the youngest artist in Billboard history to achieve eleven number-one sales on the Hot 100 chart in six years.[6] As of March 2010, she has sold an estimated 7.3 million albums and over 33.7 million singles in the United States. Billboard named Rihanna the “Digital Era Artist of the 2000s” and ranked her 17th among artists of the 2000s.
The singer has received several awards, including the 2007 World Music Awards: Best Selling Pop Female Artist and Female Artist of the Year, as well as the BRIT Awards for Best International Female Artist. Rihanna has won four Grammys, four American Music Awards, and eighteen Billboard Music Awards, and has been appointed as an official honorary cultural ambassador of Barbados.
