Description : Mbira, pronounced “Mmm – beer – ahhh” is a 29-key piano from Zimbabwe and Mozambique, made with metal tongs attached to the soundboard. The sound of this instrument is said to have mystical properties that “pleasure” the spirits. Although mbira is mainly used in traditional ceremonies, it is also very popular in African pop music and is commonly performed in groups throughout South East Africa. No one can say for sure how or when Mbira originated, but its mythology is extensive and includes stories of mermaids or angels giving it to people.
