For anyone who sees chords like C#mMaj7b9#13 and gives up (like myself thousands of times), I’ll share tips from world-class players over 6+ decades that can really speed up learning the essentials of the song…….. first, most important of all is the 3rd. The minor chord simply uses a flat 3rd. A C Major chord is C-E-G. The C minor chord is C-Eb-G. Anything else is harmony and/or melody within the chord. When learning a song, as long as you get the 3rd – the most powerful scale degree – (Major vs minor) right, you can continue to the next chord. A wrong 3rd is a trainwreck.
