I was lucky to have been encouraged by my extraordinarily hip mother to listen to Ravi Shankar and his tabla deity Alla Rakha. In late 60’s she’d bring home such esoteric albums from the public library……. I was totally captivated by Alla Rakha’s tablas and Hindi rhythms. Between this and the early Pink Floyd, Jefferson Airplane, Santana, Frank Zappa, etc. diversity of taste in music was set in stone 🙂
The amount of absolute devotion required of Hindi percussion students is immense…… some have begun as young as age 3…….. must be the Hindi tradition of pressure to over-achieve 🙂
The Hindi rhythm systems go beyond multiples/divisions of 4 and 6 but man do they work in terms of anticipation and resolution. As if that’s not enough, the scalar and harmony system involves quarter-tones……. which amounts to a mere slight bend of a guitar string. Looking forward to hearing the samples on this……. thanks!
